Vatican-Kyiv-- On 25 April 2005, the day after his inauguration, Pope Benedict XVI received representatives of the Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox churches. Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad passed on the greetings of Patriarch Alexis II, head of the Russian Orthodox Church. Archbishop Mytrofan of Pereislav and Khmelnytsk greeted the new Pope in the name of Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP).

Königstein, Germany-- “If our society is a Christian one, our children should have the right to pray at school.” So said Father Ivan Hunya from Ternopil, west Ukraine, during a recent visit to Aid to the Church in Need (ACN). Together with other teachers, he obtained a state licence to found the Patriarch Josyf Slipyj College in his parish of St. Josaphat. ACN released the news on 25 April 2005.

Kyiv – Lviv – The Armenian communities of Kyiv and Lviv on 24 April 2005 commemorated the 90th anniversary of the mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 and 1916. Some data indicate that two-thirds of Armenians living in western Armenia and the Ottoman Empire perished. Ukraine remains one of the countries that still have not recognized the event as genocide. The Armenian community hopes that the Ukrainian parliament will do this soon.

Moscow—A meeting with the head of the Roman Catholic Church is possible only after solving problems that disturb the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), including so-called proselytism and the status of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The Vatican– Ukrainian State Secretary Oleksandr Zinchenko, special representative of the president, attended Pope Benedict XVI’s inauguration ceremony on 24 April 2005. Zinchenko had a short conversation with the Pope, during which he passed on greetings and best wishes from President Viktor Yushchenko. The Pope, in turn, passed a blessing to the president and the people of Ukraine.

Kyiv—A decree of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has officially liquidated the National Committee on Religious Matters. Crimea— In accord with recent directives of the president, the regional government of southern Ukrainian Crimea is developing procedures so that all religions are treated equally. A representative of the local government told this to the participants at a meeting of the Interreligious Council of Crimea, Peace: God’s Gift, on 21 April 2005.
