Kyiv– The All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations did not introduce or adopt the pre-election address to the people of Ukraine posted on RISU’s Ukrainian-language site on 27 October. According the 28 October 2004 statement of Volodymyr Stretovych, leader of the Christian Democratic Union, the address in question was signed only by some individual members of the council disturbed by attempts “to bring the people out into the streets,” as the address noted.

Kyiv– All churches in Ukraine will be guaranteed equal rights, said Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko. He stressed that, if he wins the 31 October election, he, as protector of the Constitution, will secure the right of all citizens to freedom of religion and the church will have full freedom to minister. Yushchenko’s press service reported this on 27 October 2004.

Kyiv– Nearly 2000 faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) led a procession in Kyiv on 21 October 2004 against Ukraine joining NATO. The procession was organized by the Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods Fraternities and the Russian Movement of Ukraine.

Kyiv– On 21 October 2004, the Parliament of Ukraine rejected proposed legislative bills on amending Article 92 of the Land Code of Ukraine (bills No. 5354 and No. 5354-1), which proposed to define religious organizations as subjects of the right of permanent use of land allocated them from the state and communal property. The first bill was supported by 150 deputies, the second one by 156. The proposal to reintroduce the bills for another reading was supported by 150 deputies.

Kyiv– Ukraine’s Parliamentary Committee for Legal Policy advised Parliament to consider the bill “On amending the Ukrainian Law ‘On the Status of Judges’ (concerning the Procedure of Taking Oaths).” The bill will introduce the taking of oaths on the Bible for judges who consider themselves Christian. Lviv– The Day of the Bible, celebrated in all countries of the world on the last Sunday of October, will be officially celebrated for the first time in Ukraine. Since this year that is the presidential election day in Ukraine, the celebration will be moved to the weekend of 23 to 24 October 2004. The decision to move the holiday was made by the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations. Members of the Ukrainian Bible Society (UBS) took part in a press conference about the event on 20 October.

Kyiv– On 13 October 2003, the press service of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) published a statement concerning the Russian Orthodox Church’s (ROC) meddling in the internal affairs of Ukraine. The statement talks of an ROC address to the president of Ukraine with a call to support the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP).
