Kyiv- The leaders of six Christian denominations of Ukraine have addressed Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma to remind him of his role as guarantor of the Constitution with regard to recent election falsifications. “The people are justified in expecting from you those fateful decisions which only the president can make as guarantor of the Constitution of Ukraine,” reads the address released on 29 November 2004. Odesa- The heads of various Christian denominations of southern Ukrainian Odesa are “convinced” that a society can be called democratic only when it is based on respect for the rights of the human person. In an address released on 29 November 2004, the Christian leaders called Ukraine to unity, asked the armed forces not to act against the people, and asked civil authorities to hear the voice of the protesters. Faithful at Monastery of the Caves will be Asked to Remove “Party” Symbols 30.11.2004, [16:22] // UOC-MP //
Kyiv- At the entrance to the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves, currently part of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate, visitors will now be asked to take off any symbols that they belong to any party of voters. This decision was made on 29 November 2004 after a discussion that Archbishop Pavlo of Vyshhorod, head of the monastery, had with the monks of the monastery regarding current events in Ukraine.
UOC-MP Orthodox Chancellory Warns of Actions Conducted without its Blessing 30.11.2004, [16:20] // UOC-MP //
Kyiv- The Chancellory of the Kyivan Metropolitanate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) released a circular letter making it clear that only documents that come out of the chancellory are legitimate. This was in response to recent “attempts to politicize groups of the faithful.” The press service of the UOC-MP publicized this news on 29 November 2004.
UOC-MP Orthodox Parish in Kyiv Prays in Support of Yanukovych 30.11.2004, [16:18] // UOC-MP //
Kyiv—In the church of Nicholas the Conciliator, a parish of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) in Kyiv, members of the Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods, the Union of Orthodox Banner-carriers, and other organizations held a special moleben (prayer service) for Ukraine on 28 November 2004. The participants of the moleben announced that their candidate, Viktor Yanukovych, is an Orthodox Christian, a spiritual disciple of Fr. Zosym, and that he helps the Orthodox Church, particularly in Donbas (the Donetsk region).
Faithful in Eastern Regions of Ukraine Pray for Unity 30.11.2004, [16:16] // Church-state relations //
Donetsk- Responding to notices in the mass media about the attempts of local government administrations in eastern Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv regions to separate from the rest of the country, faithful of various denominations in the eastern regions have begun to prayer for unity. Oleksandr Zaiets, director of the Institute of Religious Freedom, reported this on 27 November 2004.
Orthodox in Kharkiv Call for Punishment of Separatists 30.11.2004, [14:22] // UAOC //
Kharkiv – Faithful of the parishes of St. Demetrius and St. John Chrysystom of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) appealed to the procurator general of Ukraine to “defend the rights of Ukrainians from infringement by the representative of the former president of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, in the Kharkiv region, Evhen Kushnariov,” who called the Kharkiv region of Ukraine to separate from the rest of the country.” The press center of the Consistory of the Kharkiv-Poltava Eparchy of the UAOC reported on the faithfuls’ appeal on 28 November 2004.
Donetsk Faithful Pray for Unity and Peace in Ukraine 30.11.2004, [14:20] // Protest //
Donetsk – On 28 November 2004, in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, representatives of numerous denominations gathered next to the regional government administration to pray for peace and unity in Ukraine. Close to 1000 gathered for the prayer, during which no political slogans were voiced. All was conducted in a calm and peaceful atmosphere, reports the site Christian Ukraine Today.
Lithuania Prays for Peace, Justice, and Freedom in Ukraine 30.11.2004, [14:18] // RCC //
Vilnius – The Roman Catholic bishops of Lithuania appealed to the faithful with the request that, during Masses celebrated 28 November 2004, all pray for help for the people of Ukraine, that they may “persevere in the current trials and with God’s blessing rejoice in peace, justice and freedom,” said Vasyl Kapkan, editor of the newspaper-bulletin “Parish Word.”
Missionary Christians Defend their Rights on Independence Square 29.11.2004, [19:43] // Protestant //
Kyiv– The tent camp in Kyiv is expanding. One tent stands out from the countless others: an orange flag is waving above with the Christian symbol of a fish. This tent was raised through the joint efforts of the Light from the East mission and the churches of the Association of the Missionary Church of Evangelical Christians in Ukraine with cooperation from the Union of Christian Students (UCS). It is not only a prayer center, it is also a place of support for people who are defending their legal rights in this camp. This was reported on 27 November 2004 by invictory.org.
