Results of First Poll Concerning Greek Catholic Patriarchate Released

Lviv – On 28 July 2004, National Deputy Oleksa Hudyma revealed the results of the first public-opinion poll conducted among the faithful and the supporters of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) concerning the patriarchate of the UGCC. The survey was conducted by the Information Center of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences at the request of the social movement For the Patriarchate of the UGCC and the Blessed Mother Teresa Welfare Fund.

Kyiv – On 28 July 2004, Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), ordained two UOC-MP bishops as archbishops: Anatolii (Hladky) of Sarny and Polissia (northern Ukraine) and Bishop Ioann (Siopko) of Khust and Vynohradiv (southwestern Ukraine's Transcarpathia region).

Odesa-- On 25 July 2004, at the invitation of the Odesa Presbyterian Church, Bishop Bronislaw Bernacki of the Roman Catholic Odesa-Simferopol diocese took part in a service on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Odesa Reformed Community. It was the first visit of a Catholic hierarch to the Reformed Church in the history of Odesa.

On 23 July 2004, Bishop Bronislaw Bernacki of the Odesa and Simferopol diocese of the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) and Methodist Pastor Petro Martianov, secretary of Odesa's Spiritual Council of Christian Denominations, visited the Odesa Regional AIDS/HIV Center. In the hall of the center, the phone numbers of ministers of various confessions are available, and the sick are free to turn to them for spiritual support.

Transcarpathia – A fire took place in the house of prayer of an Evangelical community in southwestern Ukraine's Transcarpathia region on 22 July 2004. This is the seventh church fire in the region in the last five years. In most of the cases, the fires broke out because of problems with electric wiring or electrical appliances.

Zhytomyr-- The Roman Catholic community in the central Ukrainian city of Zhytomyr claims a number of buildings which were taken from the church by the Soviet regime. Local officials are making no haste to fulfill President Leonid Kuchma’s decree of 2003 on the return of churches. They explain their delay by a lack of finances, as TV channel 1+1 reported on 22 July 2004.
