Religious Bill Again Submitted to Parliament

Kyiv -- National Deputy I. Stoiko of Viktor Yushchenko’s “Our Ukraine” faction submitted his legislative bill “On Freedom of Religion and Religious Organizations” for consideration in the Ukrainian Parliament for the second time. This news was reported by the Institute of Religious Freedom on 30 January 2004.

First “Modern-style” Roman Catholic Church Consecrated in Kyiv

Kyiv -- Bishop Stanislaw Shyrokoradiuk, vicar general of the Kyiv and Zhytomyr diocese of the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) in Ukraine, on 26 January 2004 consecrated a church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of the Church, in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. This is the first Roman Catholic Church in Kyiv to be built in the modern style of architecture.

Vinnytsia -- During a meeting in the convent of the Canossian Sisters in central Ukrainian Vinnytsia on 26 January 2004, the board of directors of the charitable mission Caritas-Spes Ukraine discussed the strategy for the mission’s activities for the next three years. The meeting, conducted by Bishop Stanislaw Shyrokoradiuk, vicar general of the Kyiv and Zhytomyr diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine and general director of “Caritas-Spes Ukraine,” gathered diocesan directors and staff members from all the Roman Catholic dioceses in Ukraine.

Jerusalem -- During a meeting between Vadim Rabinovich, president of the All-Ukrainian Jewish Congress and the United Jewish community in Ukraine, Moshe-Reuven Asman, chief rabbi of Kyiv and the Kyiv region, and the leaders of the HABAR movement in Jerusalem, Rabinovich was elected president of an organization established to facilitate the work of yeshivas. Yeshivas are Jewish religious schools. This news was reported by the information agency MIGNews on 28 January 2004.

Bakhchysarai Muslims Ask to Move Market from Cemetery

Crimea -- The local Mejlis of Crimean Tatars in the southern Ukrainian city of Bakhchysarai have started an effort to move the central farmer’s market, which according to the Mejlis representatives is situated on the territory of the former Muslim cemetery. Kyiv -- During his visit to Ukraine from 23 to 24 January 2004, Russian President Vladimir Putin gave awards to Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), and other UOC-MP hierarchs, and visited the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves.

US Ambassador Studies Orthodox Church Transfer

Kyiv -- John Herbst, US ambassador to Ukraine, on 18 January 2004 acquainted himself with the situation over the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God in the village of Malyn, central Ukrainian Zhytomyr region, and studied the documents about the church. Presently in the possession of the Rusyn Orthodox Church-Abroad (ROC-A), headed by Metropolitan Lavr, the Malyn administration is trying to transfer the church to the ownership of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate.

Inter TV, Kiev, in Russian, 24 Jan 04/ BBC Monitoring Service, UK, in English, Jan 24, 2004— Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma said that he “always was and ... continue[s] to be in favor of a united church," but questioned "the behaviour of some religious leaders" in Ukraine. He talked about this and other church matters at a meeting with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin and Metropolitan Volodymyr [Sabodan], head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate in Kyiv on 24 January 2004.
