Nizhyn—Students of local colleges in the city of Nizhyn, in northern Ukraine’s Chernihiv region, who are members of an Orthodox brotherhood plan to build a church in honor of the martyr St. George the Conqueror. The news was posted on pravoslavie.ru on 30 December 2004.

Kyiv—Vasyl Anisimov, head of the press service of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), emphasized that the political views of the faithful or clergy cannot be the cause of any persecutions from church leaders. On 30 December 2004 Anisimov commented about a letter sent to RISU by some UOC-MP faithful on 29 December asking the patriarch of Constantinople to establish parishes in Ukraine because they “have become in discord in the churches of the Moscow Patriarchate.”

Moscow—“I expect that the new president of Ukraine will have enough wisdom to go the way of unity and not confrontation,” said Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexis II. “We welcome any election, if it has been done by the people,” added the patriarch on 30 December 2004.

Kyiv—Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), on 29 December 2004 met with Dietmar Studemann, German ambassador to Ukraine. The two discussed the current status of the UOC-MP, the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves, and religious schools in Kyiv. The Russian Orthodox Church-Abroad and its relations with the Russian Orthodox Church were also discussed, as was the question of the canonization of saints in the UOC-MP.

Kyiv—A group of priests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) from Donbas says that Ukraine awaits “a thorny path” because people did not listen to the Virgin Mary and elected Viktor Yushchenko president instead of the one chosen by God, Viktor Yanukovych. The priests announced this in a statement to all Orthodox faithful released on 27 December 2004. (Donbas is a historical name for Ukraine’s far eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions.)

Moscow – Several hundred people gathered on 24 December 2004 at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow to demonstrate against “the interference of the United States in Ukraine’s internal affairs.” The protest was organized by a number of Orthodox organizations in Russia, including the Union of Orthodox Citizens, the Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods, and the Christian Rebirth Union.

Odesa – Terror against supporters of Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko is growing in southern Ukraine’s Odesa region. Among a number of various attacks on premises of district headquarters and ward members, an incident occurred in the Bright House orphanage, where spilled mercury was found. The volunteers of the orphanage have been supportive of Yushchenko’s campaign. The Spiritual Council of Christian Denominations of the Odesa Region have expressed their protest concerning the political provocation directed against the orphanage. RISU’s Ukrainian-language site posted the news on 24 December 2004.

Kyiv – The hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church–Moscow Patriarchate (UOC–MP) ask the faithful to demonstrate sincere love and respect to their neighbor, regardless of his or her political and other convictions. These topics were covered in an address issued on 24 December 2004 by Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the UOC–MP.
Yushchenko Representative in Chernivtsi Demands Response to Illegal Campaigning by UOC–MP Orthodox Priests 31.12.2004, [11:37] // Church-state relations //
Chernivtsi – Ivan Demchak, head of presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko’s regional People Power headquarters in western Ukrainian Chernivtsi, has demanded that Volodymyr Moiseienko, deputy attorney of the region, react to numerous facts of illegal campaigning by local priests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC – MP). The campaigning “threaten[s] peace and societal harmony in our country,” said Demchak. This was reported on 23 December 2004 by bukinfo.cv.ua.
