Sumy – Northern Ukraine's Sumy eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) organized a scholarly conference dedicated to the hundredth anniversary of the Ukrainian translation of the Bible. Nearly fifty Ukrainian and foreign scholars participated. The conference resulted in a new resolution, as the Sumy Eparchial Administration of the UOC-KP reported to the RISU on 26 August 2004.
Frescoes of St. Michael’s Cathedral Returned to Kyiv 29.08.2004, [03:01] // news //
Kyiv – The last seven frescoes from St. Michael’s Gold-domed Cathedral in Kyiv, which were kept in the Hermitage, the greatest museum of the history of art and culture in Russia, were brought from Saint Petersburg to the capital of Ukraine. Correspondent.net reported this on 25 August 2004.

Kharkiv – On 24 August 2004, Armenian Apostolic Catholicos Karekin II visited eastern Ukrainian Kharkiv. He took part in a ceremony laying flowers at the Monument of Assembled Ukraine in honor of Independence Day. (Ukraine celebrated its 13th anniversary of independence on that day.) The main objective of the catholicos’ visit was to consecrate the newly-built Church of the Holy Resurrection, which had been under construction for almost four years.

Kyiv – On 21 August 2004, the bill “On State Financing of Religious Communities” (registration # 6051, author National Deputy L. Chernovetskyi) was introduced to Ukraine’s Parliament. Chernovetskyi is a candidate for president of Ukraine and head of the country's Christian Liberal Party. Elections are to be held on 31 October.

Lviv-Kharkiv – In western Ukrainian Lviv, the 15th anniversary of the revival of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) was celebrated on 19 August 2004. The anniversary was celebrated in eastern Ukrainian Kharkiv on 22 July.

Odesa – Metropolitan Ahafanhel (Savvin) of southern Ukrainian Odesa and Izmail, Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), has called upon Russians to support the UOC-MP. In an interview with the Odesa newspaper “RiO,” he said that “the factor of church unity in the bosom of the Russian Orthodox Church [ROC]” should be taken into account in relations between Russia and Ukraine. The news was posted on the site Pravoslavie.ru on 20 August 2004.

Sudova Vyshnia (Lviv region) – The representatives of eight religious groups in Ukraine started their Path of Reconciliation around the country, beginning in Sudova Vyshnia (Lviv region) on 19 August 2004. Laity and clergy of three Orthodox churches, the Greek Catholic and Roman Catholic churches, and Jews and Muslims are taking part, the Agency RorUm reported.

Lviv – On 17 August 2004, the Regional Election Campaign Headquarters (RECH) for presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych in western Ukrainian Lviv accused the Lviv RECH for presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko of using methods “which contradict Christian and social morals” and said that petition signatures are being collected near churches. The press office of Yuschenko’s RECH, in a quick response, justified the practice.
UOC-KP Orthodox Start Chaplaincy in Lutsk 21.08.2004, [00:09] // UOC-KP //
Lutsk – The Volyn eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) launched a chaplaincy program in northwestern Ukrainian Lutsk on 17 August 2004. The chaplains will minister to those not able to come to church, including those serving in the army and those in hospitals and prisons.

Crimea — Several monks of the Crimean eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) have settled in the cave church in the Manhup Plateau of the Bakhchisarai district in southern Ukraine’s Crimean Autonomous Republic. UOC-MP Metropolitan Lazar of Simferopol and Crimea announced on 11 August 2004 that the UOC-MP intends to revive the church there.
