Zarvanytsia, Ternopil region -- On 25 and 26 October 2003, the All-Ukrainian Brotherhood of St. Andrew the Apostle made a pilgrimage to Zarvanytsia in western Ukraine’s Ternopil region, which is home to the Greek Catholic wonder-working icon of the Mother of God. Among those who took part in the pilgrimage were the Lviv and Buchach branches of the brotherhood, the faithful from Ternopil and representatives of the Kyivan and Kharkiv branches.

Kharkiv -- The consistory of the Kharkiv and Poltava eparchy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) and St. Dmytro’s parish of the UAOC in eastern Ukrainian Kharkiv on 24 October 2003 filed a lawsuit with the Supreme Court of Ukraine against the National Committee on Religious Matters of Ukraine for refusing to register the eparchy’s statutes.

Kyiv -- On 28 October 2003, the St. Alexander Nevsky Orthodox Brotherhood of the Russian Movement in Ukraine and the Union of Orthodox Brotherhoods of Ukraine picketed the Kyivan municipal state administration, protesting advertisements and commercials containing indecent nudity. The protesters called pornography in advertising “the contempt of Christian morals.” In addition, they demanded that advertising that contains texts in English be banned, since it contradicts the law of Ukraine “On Advertising.”

A marathon held under the slogan “Let’s Build a Church for the Kobzar” by the First National Radio Channel has collected 39 thousand hryvnias (about 1,600 US dollars) for the construction of a church near the Chernecha Mount in Kanev, where Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s greatest writer and painter, is buried. Kyiv-- A working group consisting of representatives of the main religions in Ukraine discussed the concept of church-state relations in the Ukrainian Razumkov Center for Economic and Political Research on 22 October 2003. According to the participants of the meeting, the discussion was fruitful and they reached agreement on most issues. They identified medicine, and education and the army as the main spheres of church-state contact.
