Lama Ole Nidal read a public lecture “Fearlessness and Joy” at the Palace of Arts in western Ukrainian Lviv on 26 June 2003. According to Serhii Dadukevych, president of the Buddhist center “Diamond Way” of the School of Karma Kagyu in Lviv, this was the Buddhist teacher’s fourth visit to the city.

The heads of numerous Christian churches of Ukraine sent an address on 23 June 2003 to Ukraine’s president, the head of parliament, and the prime minister requesting them not to pass new religious legislation that is under consideration. The legislation “On Amendments to the Law of Ukraine ‘On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations’” was worked on by Ukraine’s National Committee on Religious Matters, and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine sent it to Parliament for consideration. Parishes of the Belarusian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (BAOC) intend to go under the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) in Russia. Archbishop Petro (Hushcha) of the BAOC has begun preliminary correspondence on the subject. Similar movements of Orthodox seeking alternative jurisdictional ties, separating from the Russian Orthodox Church, are also happening in Russia itself. The information agency “Ohliadach” (Observer) reported this information on 26 June 2003, citing the Moscow eparchy of the UOC-KP as a source.

Almost all religious groups in Ukraine have difficulties with local authorities regarding the return of property or in acquiring land for new building. This was the assessment of Carlos Pascual, American ambassador to Ukraine, in an article on US-Ukrainian relations published in Ukrainian in Kyiv’s “Day” newspaper 24 June 2003.

Bishop Metrofan of Pereislav-Khmelnytsk, responsible for managing affairs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarch (UOC-MP), and Cardinal Roger Etchegeray met on 24 June 2003. The hierarchs met at the residence of Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the UOC-MP. The cardinal is in Ukraine to mark the second anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Ukraine in 2001.

Ukraine cannot be left alone with the pain from the accident at Chornobyl, said Cardinal Roger Etchegeray during a visit to the nuclear power plant on 24 June 2003. The cardinal said that the purpose of his visit was “the desire to show at Chornobyl the solidarity of the whole Catholic world with Ukrainians.” The cardinal is in Ukraine to mark the second anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit in 2001.

Construction work began on 23 June 2003 on the land next to St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Kyiv. Today the church premises are shared by the Roman Catholic community and the National Building of Organ and Chamber Music. The construction began with armed police in attendance. Maksym Strikha, a doctor of physics and mathematics and writer, commented on the situation for the agency “Maydan-Inform.”

The Hryhorii Vashchenko Pedagogical Society in western Ukrainian Lviv has sent an appeal to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) and regional leaders, questioning the value of Teen Star, a chastity education program from the United States. Yurii Pidlisnyi, director of the Institute of Marriage and Family Life of the Ukrainian Catholic University, defends the program. RISU’s Ukrainian version reported the story on 23 June 2003.

Ukraine's efforts to ensure religious freedom and freedom of confession. Etchegeray made this statement at a meeting with Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma in Kyiv on Saturday, Kuchma's press service said.


Odesa Pan-Christian Council Opposes New Religion Legislation

The members of the Spiritual Council of Christian Denominations of southern Ukrainian Odesa are disturbed that a committee of the country’s parliament on 17 June 2003 recommended the parliament pass revised legislation on religion. The members’ statement was released on 20 June 2003.
