Municipality Returns Churches to Odesa Catholics

ODESA, JULY 29, 2003 (Zenit.org).- Civic authorities in Ukraine unanimously voted to return Church buildings, confiscated by Bolshevik revolutionaries over 80 years ago, to the Catholic community. Municipal deputies will hand over the property to the Latin rite Catholic diocese of Odesa-Simferopol, reconstituted by John Paul II in 2002 over the diocese that existed before the revolution.

Lviv-- A conference of monks and nuns of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) entitled “Transfiguration in God” was held in western Ukrainian Lviv from 21 to 26 July 2003. It was aimed at preparation for the forthcoming monastic congress and discussion of daily problems, and gathered representatives of all monastic communities and monasteries of the UGCC. Among those present at the conference were also Roman Catholic Auxiliary Bishop Stanislaw Padewski of Lviv, Archbishop Ihor Isichenko of the Ukrainian Orthodox Autocephalous Church, and guests from abroad. Basilian Fr. Yosyf Budai, a participant at the conference, commented on his order’s activities, including missions outside of western Ukraine.

Odesa -- Currently southern Ukrainian Odesa has no building for the newly created Odesa and Crimea exarchate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), said Fr. Mykhailo Ivantsyk, the UGCC archpriest for Odesa and the region, on 29 July 2003.

Kyiv -- The Roman Catholic community of St. Nicholas in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, and Bishop Stanislaw Shyrokoradiuk, vicar general of the Kyiv and Zhytomyr diocese, have sent a letter to President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma, Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, Volodymyr Lytvyn, head of the Ukrainian Parliament, and Oleksandr Omelchenko, mayor of Kyiv, asking to stop the construction of an office building on the protected territory of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, which is a monument of architecture of Ukraine. This news was reported by the Catholic Media Center on 25 July 2003.

The Apostolic Nunciature in Ukraine on 28 July 2003 announced that Pope John Paul II has approved the following decisions of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC): 1) the creation of the exarchate of southern Ukrainian Odesa and Crimea by dividing the territory of the Kyiv and Vyshhorod exarchate; 2) the appointment of Fr. Vasyl Ivasiuk of the Sokal eparchy as exarch of Odesa and Crimea.

Toronto-- The Most Reverend Bishop Isidore Borecky, the former eparch of Toronto and Eastern Canada, fell asleep in the Lord on Wednesday, July 23rd, 2003, at the Toronto Western Hospital, in his 92nd year of life, having dedicated 65 years of his life as a priest and 55 as a bishop. The Pontifical Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, July 26, 2003 at 10:00 a.m., at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Dormition, 3625 Cawthra Road, Mississauga, by His Beatitude Patriarch Lubomyr of Ukraine, assisted by bishops and clergy.
