Religion Official Says New Legislation On Freedoms Necessary

Viktor Bondarenko, head of Ukraine's National Committee on Religious Affairs, thinks it is necessary to pass a new legislative proposal regarding the freedom of religious organizations in Ukraine. He spoke about this in an interview posted on the site of the press service of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) on 28 January 2003.

A dispute has arisen in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv around the Church of Saints Elizabeth and Olha, the former Church of Saint Elizabeth, of the Roman Catholic Church (RCC), now in the possession of a community of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC). Ukrainian Greek Catholic Bishop Stepan Meniok, exarch of Donetsk-Kharkiv and a member of the interepiscopal commission of the UGCC and RCC, commented on the situation on 28 January 2003.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an announcement thanking Metropolitan Nykodym of Kharkiv and Bohodukhivskyi (Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate) “for his great personal contribution towards the spread of spiritual relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the strengthening of friendship and cooperation between the nations.” The press service of the head of the Russian government released the news on 27 January, 2003.

Muslim Mufti Gives Conditions For Interreligious Cooperation

Khadzhi Emirali Ablaiev, Muslim mufti in southern Ukrainian Crimea, has given his conditions for cooperation with the region’s interreligious council, Peace: God’s Gift. The conditions are written in a letter sent to Metropolitan Lazar of Simferopol and Crimea of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate, co-head of the council. The news was posted on UNIAN 24 January 2003.

Lviv Authorities To Return Archiepiscopal Palace To Roman Catholic Church

By the end of this year, the civil authorities of western Ukraine’s Lviv region will return the archiepiscopal palace to the Roman Catholic Church (RCC). At present, “Systema,” a government institute for scholarly research, is located in the palace. Pastor Oleh Stetsiuk headed a session of the Liturgical Committee of the Ukrainian Lutheran Church on 22 January, 2003. The committee looked over a new Ukrainian Lutheran prayerbook, which has been arranged on the basis of two publications: the Ukrainian Evangelist Prayerbook and the Ukrainian Evangelist Songbook. These were prepared by Pastor Teodor Yarchuk and published in 1933.

Head Chosen For Government Commission On Church Rights

Dmytro Tabachnyko has been named head of the interdepartmental commission for the preparation of propositions regarding the renewal of the rights of churches and religious organizations violated as a result of the totalitarian policies of the former USSR towards religion. This decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine goes into effect on 21 January, 2003.

Protestant Leaders Meet Parliamentary Head Against Crime and Corruption

Leaders of Protestant churches in Ukraine met with Volodymyr Stretovych, head of Ukraine’s Parliamentary Committee on the Fight with Organized Crime and Corruption, on 17 January 2003 in Kyiv. A number of issues related to legislation that protects freedom of religious expression in Ukraine were discussed.
