During a meeting of the All-Ukraine Union of the Association of Evangelical Baptists (AUU AEB) on 18 February 2003, the Evangelical Baptists summarized their activities in Ukraine in 2002 and made plans for the current year.
70-Year-Old Husar Is Most Trusted Hierarch

Ukrainian tv channel “1+1” announced on 26 February 2003 that Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, is rated the most trusted hierarch among all the confessions in Ukraine. Cardinal Husar turned 70 that day. As he is on a pastoral visit to England after his trip to Canada, the cardinal will celebrate his birthday in Lviv with a Divine Liturgy on 2 March, with the participation of Archbishop Nikola Eterovic, apostolic nuncio in Ukraine.

On 26 February 2003, Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma signed a decree to award Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the order of Yaroslav the Wise for his significant contribution towards the restoration of spirituality, consolidation of the ideas of mercy and accord in society, and long-time fruitful religious work. Cardinal Husar celebrated his 70th birthday on this day.

Autocephalous Orthodox Archbishop Addresses Famine’s 70th Anniversary

On 25 February 2003, Archbishop Ihor (Isichenko) of Kharkiv and Poltava of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) released a pastoral address on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Soviet-imposed famine in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933. The UAOC announced March as a month of prayer in memory of the famine victims.
International Conference On “Sects” Opens In Cherkasy

An international conference dedicated to the issues of protection of families and individuals from so-called “totalitarian sects” opened in central Ukrainian Cherkasy on 24 February 2003. Representatives of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), scholars, doctors and law enforcement officers from Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and Russia came to participate in the conference.

Bishop Jan Olszanski, former ordinary of the Kamianets-Podilskyi diocese of the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) passed away on 23 February 2003. The funeral was held in Kamianets-Podilskyi on 25 February 2003 with the participation of hierarchs and priests of the RCC and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

Husar Ends Pastoral Visit To Canada

Nigerian Pentecostal Pastor Claims Stay In Ukraine Legal

Pastor Sunday Adelaja, a Nigerian citizen and head of a Pentecostal church called the Embassy of the Blessed Kingdom of God for all Nations, maintains that he is legally staying in Ukraine. According to an announcement posted on the church’s website on 22 February 2003, letters with documents confirming Pastor Adelaja’s legal stay in Ukraine have been sent to Ukrainian government agencies, the mass media, and Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). These documents would contradict information spread through the Ukrainian mass media during the past month.
