Health Ministry and Orthodox (UOC-MP) Cooperate to Combat HIV/AIDS03.12.2003, [11:45] // UOC-MP //
Olha Lapushenko, chief sanitary doctor of Ukraine, said the Ministry of Health Care of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate are currently working out a program of cooperation between physicians and the church in combating HIV/AIDS. Lapushenko made this announcement at a press conference entitled “Global Epidemics Call for Global Action,” held in the Ministry of Health Care of Ukraine on 1 December 2003, when the international community was marking World AIDS Day.

Ukrainian government bodies should not interfere in the internal affairs of churches. That was one of the conclusions of the participants of a conference entitled “Church and Authorities: Cooperation or Abuse,” held in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, on 28 November 2003. Representatives of 11 Christian denominations, the mass media, state officials, national deputies, members of the National Committee on Religious Matters of Ukraine, scholars and social activists participated.

During a three-day visit to Ukraine, Bhakhti Vihyana Hosvami Makharadzha, head of Russia’s Community of Krishna Consciousness (Hare Krishna), discussed various religious issues with his Ukrainian colleagues. The news was posted on krishna.org.ua on 27 November 2003, and the visit happened at the end of the week of 17 November.

In an interview for “The All-Ukrainian Jewish Congress” weekly newspaper on 11 November 2003, Yaakov Dov Bleich, chief rabbi of Kyiv and Ukraine, said Jewish communities in Ukraine are developing successfully. According to the rabbi, who has now spent 14 years in this country, the Ukrainian Jewish community has renewed its roots.
