Odesa -- “I believe the construction of the Nativity Cathedral and the opening of the Odesa Theological Institute were the greatest successes in the year 2003,” said Bishop Paisii of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP). Bishop Paisii, head of the southern Ukrainian Odesa and Balta eparchy of the UOC-KP summarized the eparchy’s work over the last year, calling it a year of hard work to strengthen the community. Metropolitan Adrian (Staryna) of Moscow and Bohorodsk of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP) recently sent a letter to Mykhailo Horyn, head of the Ukrainian World Coordinating Council, complaining about the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Russia. Metropolitan Adrian said the local authorities in the city of Noginsk, near Moscow, had threatened to take away the Church of the Holy Trinity of the UOC-KP and give it to the Russian Orthodox Church. On 21 December 2003, faithful of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in southern Ukrainian Odesa gathered for a festive meeting to mark the establishment of the Odesa and Crimea exarchate of the UGCC.Among those present at the ceremony were Bishop Vasyl Ivasiuk, UGCC exarch of Odesa and Crimea, Prof. Myroslav Marynovych, director of the Institute of Religion and Society at the Ukrainian Catholic University, and clergy and faithful of the exarchate. Bishop Ivasiuk, the first hierarch for the new exarchate, was ordained on 28 September 2003.

Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), on 24 December 2003 released an address to the faithful of the Lviv archeparchy of the UGCC and to people of good will, entitled “Reflections before the New Year.” In it, Cardinal Husar stressed that consolidation is necessary to combat divisions in the church.

The municipal administration in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, will consider transferring the Roman Catholic St. Nicholas Cathedral, which the local community is currently sharing with performers of organ music, to the ownership of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. Volodymyr Yalovyi, deputy head of the Kyivan municipal administration, announced this at a briefing on 23 December 2003.
Crimean Premier Returns Former Worship Building to Karaites 25.12.2003, [13:57] // Karaite //
Serhii Kunitsyn, head of the Council of Ministers of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in southern Ukraine, decreed that the building of the former Karaite kenasa (house of worship), currently occupied by the state television company “Crimea,” should be returned to the local Karaite community. This news was reported by the information agency “ForUm” on 24 December 2003.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) has no grounds for claiming the Cathedral of the Transfiguration in southern Ukrainian Odesa as its property. Anatolii Senchuk, head of the Odesa Regional Department on Religious Matters, announced this on 22 December 2003.
