Cardinal Husar Speaks at Democratic Forces Forum

Ternopil -- Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, addressed participants of a forum of democratic forces, held in western Ukrainian Ternopil on 28 August 2003. The cardinal gave his blessing to the 2280 participants, who arrived from different districts of the region.

Mukachevo Bishop Appointed Exarch for Serbia and Montenegro

Vatican-- On 27 August 2003, Pope John Paul II established an apostolic exarchate for the 22 thousand Greek Catholics in Serbia and Montenegro, appointing Bishop Djura Dzudzar as the first apostolic exarch in the area. For the last two and a half years, Bishop Dzudzar has been auxiliary bishop of the Mukachevo eparchy, in far southwestern Ukraine's Transcarpathia region.

Lviv Police Investigate Disappearance of Sheptytsky Furniture

The municipal police department in western Ukrainian Lviv has started an investigation into the disappearance of 18th and 19th-century furniture that belonged to Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) in the early 20th century. The investigation was requested by Bishop Ihor Vozniak, protosyncellus (chancellor) of the UGCC’s Lviv archeparchy. This news was reported by “The Lviv Gazette” on 27 August 2003.

Orthodox (UOC-MP) Archbishop Anathematizes Official for Fomenting Conflict

Archbishop Ionafan of Kherson and Tavria of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) has anathematized Oleksandr Tkachenko, head of the state department on religious matters in the southern Ukrainian Kherson region. The archbishop accuses Tkachenko of fomenting an interdenominational conflict in the village of Kalynenske. This news was reported on 26 August 2003.

Hoodlums Deface Synagogue Walls in Mukachevo

Unknown hoodlums desecrated the synagogue in southwestern Ukrainian Mukachevo, Transcarpathia region, drawing a Nazi swastika and some offensive expressions on the building walls. This news was reported by the information agency UNIAN on 26 August 2003.

On 24 August 2003, the Roman Catholic community in southern Ukrainian Odesa, in addition to Ukraine’s Independence Day, celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Assumption Cathedral. They also prepared to transfer an icon back to the cathedral that was removed 50 years ago.

President Awards Greek Catholic Cardinal

Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma awarded Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), the order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise for his outstanding personal contributions towards the renewal of spirituality in Ukraine and strengthening the ideas of mercy and accord in society, as well as his long and prolific religious activity. The ceremony, held in the Mariinskyi Palace in Kyiv on 23 August 2003, was dedicated to the 12th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. The cardinal thanked President Kuchma for this high award. “This award makes me think about the future,” said Cardinal Husar.
