US State Department: "We expressed concern about actions that could be interpreted as restricting basic freedoms. We welcome the public offer by the Ukrainian Security Service Chief to meet with the university rector."

DerUS.jpgWASHINGTON-KYIV On June 2, 2010, the State Department posted on its site the following statement regarding the Ukrainian Catholic University: “Today, the State Department raised with the Charge d’Affaires of the Ukrainian Embassy issues related to freedom of speech and association in Ukraine, including reports of recent contact between security service officials and the rector of Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. We expressed concern about actions that could be interpreted as restricting basic freedoms. We welcome the public offer by the Ukrainian Security Service Chief to meet with the university rector. Ukrainians should be proud of their democratic progress, and we hope that progress will continue,” reported UNIAN.

It was reported to RISU that on June 4 the deputy V. Yavorivskyi will read out at the session of the Supreme Council of Ukraine the following deputy’s inquiry to the head of the Security Service of Ukraine:

With regard to the pressure and intimidation of the administration and students of the Ukrainian Catholic University by the Security Service of Ukraine in order to prevent participation of students in the peaceful protest actions, which is the first sign of the beginning of the revival of KGB times.
